I was doing a bit of comedy and Impro, but when Triple J started playing Australian Alternative bands in the early 90s I got interested in actually seeing them live. I had about 10 favourites that I always went to when they played, but around 1995 they pretty much all disbanded. So I thought, since I like female singers I might as well see everyone and find new replacements, and that's when I started doing a lot of bands/artists. I probably had about 100 new favourites that I always followed, but around 2005 I got fed up and quit.
27.05.24 : Just found out David James Young got the Guinness record for attending 257 gigs in a year - lol - (actually 327 but some can't be counted).
At the peek I was probably doing 3-5 nights a week, but as an estimate lets say 3 nights a week - 4 is probably closer -. And I always saw all 3 bands on the bill in case one was good. Then if you factor that over a year, ie, 3 nights x 3 bands x 52 weeks, it's probably around 500 bands sets per year - some were repeats, some were new -
I was looking at DJY's band list to see if we saw the same bands, but he started a few years after I quit so there wasn't many. Then I remembered my incomplete band list book. Basically I only started the list maybe in the last 5 years(2000-ish), and it doesn't have any details - I regret not knowing the venues and dates now -, it just has the band names, M/F singers, and their score so as to avoid repeats I didn't like.
So I started the arduous task of typing them all(600-ish), and actually searching all of them if they still have presence online, into a list - I'm never getting that 60 hrs back - ouch! -.

Band fact: I think I saw Tom Gleeson's band The Fantastic Leslie(1999-2003) - lol -. I was going through my inaccurate band list book, ie, most bands/artists are there but some have poor spelling and grammar, as a bit of fun to compete with Guinness holder David James Young's band list - lol -, and there is an entry "Fantastic Leslie" - that's what I mean about grammar/spelling, ie, missing "The" -. And the only band I can find around that era(1995-2005) is Gleeson's The Fantastic Leslie - lol -.
Band fact: I used to follow Club Hoy, and when Penny Flanagan split - Julie stole Penny's BF the guitarist of Club Hoy Bernie Hayes - I followed Penny. Then when Kitty Flanagan came back from the UK she used to come to the gigs as well. I remember seeing Kitty at the Cat and Fiddle(Balmain) a few times, and at Penny's album release gig for Penny Flanagan And The New Moon – Bravado(1995) at The Basement(Circular Quay), where Kitty actually did a warm-up comedy set before the band played. Penny eventually got married and forgave Julie, and I went to the Club Hoy reunion gig 14.02.16 : Club Hoy - Hack Valentine’s Day : Camelot Lounge.

I've seen a lot of live music in that period, maybe 1500 sets. I did a rough calculation for a year, at the peak it worked out to 3 nights a week, sometimes 4. So with 3 bands per night, approx 10 bands per week, multiplied by 52 weeks, comes out to approximately 500 per year. Did this for 2 years straight, and the other years were once or twice a week. This is nothing special, as I saw a couple of others doing the same thing.
Of course my favourite bands were repeated constantly, and I had a lot of favourites.

Just a some of the 650 bands that I have keep a record of seeing. I only started keeping records late in that period to stop doubling up, I've forgotten the early ones.
The artist with the most views was iOTA with 53, next was Stella One Eleven with about half, 25ish.
Due to my engineering background I have to analyse everything so I came up with the following formula as to what made an artist appealing to me.
1st - Interesting voice, 2nd - Good writing, 3rd - Technically accurate, ability to sing in key
eg iOTA Interesting voice+good writing+technically proficient=Great
Stella One Eleven Interesting voice+good writing+not perfect key=Good
Abi Tucker Interesting voice+not good writing+technically proficient=Not very good
Alex Lloyd Interesting voice+good writing+mainly out of key(live)=Acceptable(live)
Alex Lloyd's CDs Interesting voice+good writing+in key=Good
Even an opera singer is very technically accurate, but I find the voice not very interesting even with all their training. So it looks like Interesting voice+good writing is the main criteria
